It's no surprise considering just how long this great, reliable brand of toy trucks has been around! In 1947, the first Tonka brand toy trucks were actually designed and manufactured by the Mound Metalcraft Company, a small garden toll manufacturer operating from a small schoolhouse basement in Minnesota. In their first year of operation, a staff of only a half dozen people produced a total of 37,000 metal trucks with two designs. This inventory sold out in just a few months as many post-World War II families quickly accepted this new toy. As a result, in 1949, the first Tonka dump truck was introduced launching the first generation of the Tonka brand's family tree. Today, the Tonka brand upholds the same premise it was found on: a toy should be durable and provide the child with as much play value possible.

My toddler's favorite toy

I have a little guy (...) and grandma got this for him a few weeks ago. I have never seen this child fall in love with a toy the way he has fallen in love with this one.In short:It has a garbage can with a flip-top lid, an action figure, a sign my son rarely uses, separate levers for the lights and mechanical features, a forklift-like device to lift and empty the garbage can, a rear hatch that pops open, and best of all - the ability to dump garbage out like a dumptruck dumps dirt. And when my son is done playing with it, all the little extra pieces that come with the truck and be stored in the back of the truck.More detailed:It has a "real" garbage can that you can put things into - great for finger dexterity. My little guy isn't the type to swallow small things so I feel comfortable giving him dried pinto beans and small screws or nuts or marbles. If you feel less comfortable, you can also wad up small bits of paper and load the can up.Once the garbage can is loaded up with "trash" your child can slide the can into a side-loader that looks like a forklift. This can be tricky for your younger child - especially at the "I do it myself!!" stage, but after demonstrating how to load it and coaching him on it for a few minutes, he had the hang of it. The big thing is that you have to load it in straight - if you fit it onto the loader crooked, the lid of the trashcan won't necessarily open up to let the trash dump into the truck.And dumping the trash is the coolest thing ever to my son. He works a little lever and the can goes up up up - and *dump*! - the contents of the can go into the truck. The truck has a pretty big capacity, so lots of loads can go in.Then when it's time to "go to the landfill" and dump out the "trash", my son can not only pop open the back of the truck but **the bed of the truck is built like a dumptruck's bed so the whole container can be tipped up - allowing for much more satisfying dumping as the contents go wooshing onto the floor!!**. There is no picture of this on the packaging, or on any of the toystore websites - it was a cool extra my son stumbled upon and I'm tickled that the truck was made so thoughtfully.(...)The only other downside is that the action figure doesn't sit comfortably in the cab of the truck - my son therefore stuffs him in like a rolled-up carpet across both seats.Even so - this is by far my little guy's favorite truck and it was well worth every penny and if the day comes that the truck or the can falls apart, I will rush out and replace it in a heartbeat.

Horrible Christmas experience

We were so excited to get this item for my son. He had seen it at the store and wanted it for Christmas. When he opened it he had a smile across his face and couldn't wait to start using it. We figured that being Tonka it would be well made. Needless to say it did not work great. He opened it, put the garbage can on the lifting arm and started driving it around the carpet. He made one trip around the living room and on the return trip he bumped the edge of the garbage can on the edge of a package. The garbage can snapped off causing the dumping arm to break from the lifting belt. The little piece of plastic that holds the dumping arm to the lifting belt is broken and there is no way to fix it. My five year old son disolved into tears and was sad the rest of the day. So far we have no idea how to fix it and he is still sad. That was his favorite toy he had gotten for Christmas and it lasted no more than five minutes. He was not being rough just pushing it around in a circle while crawling on his hands and knees. I am still shocked that it broke this easily.

Boys Love Trash

My 2 boys love trash trucks. They spend all day hauling "trash" with it. They love to show me how to run the trucks. I was afraid that the wrong color would come through the mail, but the orange truck arrived safely and now sits beside 2 green ones and a red one. Still trying to pick up a blue one! The only down side is we go through lots for batteries.
