5Nice design update. Works like a charm.
By Jim Krupnik
The 430 is plenty of flash for many photographers. and makes a nice walkaround flash, backup, or outstanding slave flash for someone who gets bitten by the photo bug in a serious way. The only current flash model that can compete is the Canon 580EX, which costs about a hundred bucks more. Forget the Sigma flash. The 580 is a much better unit (I'll explain in a sec), but it is bigger, heavier, and again, more expensive. The 430 can do most of the important things a 580 can do that an amateur is likely to use, and then some. Here are the important differences... The 430 is pretty powerful, but the 580 is much more powerful than the 430 (GN 58 vs GN 43 (meters)). That's a lot of extra reach, or extra bounce capacity. Again though, the 430 is plenty strong in it's own right. The 580 has a fun strobe feature that the 430 does not have. The 580 has much greater manual control than the 430, by virtue of being able to adjust it's output in double the number of increments compared to a 430. The 580 has 14 custom functions, while the 430 has 6. The 580 has an easier to use function wheel than the 430's "button wheel". The 580 head can rotate 180 degrees in either direction, and be set to less than 90 degrees to the lens axis, while the 430 can only rotate to 180 degrees in one direction, and cannot dip below 90 degrees to the lens axis. The 580 can control other 580's, and 430's as slaves via it's infrared optical control transmitter/reciever. The 580 covers all focus sensors on EOS cameras up to the 45 points used by the pro bodies. The 430 covers up to 9 sensors, which is fine until you get beyond the 5D body (the Rebel line, 10D, 20D, and 30D are fully covered). Both flashes include a pull out wide panel that will cover a lens as wide as 14mm on a full frame body, or as wide as 10mm on a 10,20,30D, or Rebel body, but the 580 also has a pull out "catchlight" panel designed to put sparkle in the subjects' eyes when using the flash in bounce mode. There are a few more things, but that should cover the big ones.OK, the 580 is the knockout champion, so why did I rate the 430 with 5 stars? Because it deserves them. Canon was wise enough to pack very good power, and a FULL feature set into the 430 without screwing the prospective buyer by leaving out one or two important features that would force them to spend the extra bucks on a 580. The 430 is built well, looks sweet, works like the fine instrument it is, and is significantly smaller than the 580. The fact is, I use the 430 as my preferred flash more often than not. A trip to the car races, a birthday party, general photo fun, family stuf, etc. It is more flash than most people will ever need, at a good price. For those times that I need more, or want to use multiple flash units, the 580 heavy artillery is brought out, and the 430 becomes a second unit under the control of the 580. Both units come with a clever little "foot" that allows you to position them on any flat surface, so you can set up your scene lighting without having to use tripods to hold your slave flash units. If the photo bug bites you, you will end up owning both flash units. Get the 430 first. If you never get into serious multi flash setups, the 430 will serve you just fine. I you do, you will end up buying it anyway :).By the way, someone complained about cycle time on the 430. That was nonsense. Either it was a defective unit, or the reviewer was on the cheap, and used alkaline batteries. All flash units are very current hungry when they recharge after a full blast of light. Alkaline batteries are not capable of delivering high current levels more than a few times when they are new. Internal resistance builds up, and they begin to deliver such small current rates that you could sing an entire opera between flashes (no matter what brand of flash). Always use a high current technology battery like NiMH in a flash unit. You can buy a set of four 2700 MAh rechargeable batteries at WalMart for about seven bucks, or buy a brick of 24 of them online for about a buck each, and get a good charger for cheap too. With the right batteries, your 430 will recover from a full power flash in less than 4 seconds (about 2.5 in real life), and for less than full power shots (fill flash, etc.), you can take several shots in one second. Alkaline batteries will work in a pinch, but that is the only time you should use them. Lithium is a good technology for flash units too, but is still rather expensive. Buy NiMH for now.

5Great flash!
By Bob Sakamano
I am a beginner to SLR flash photography, and I spent several weeks researching various flashes, both by online reviews, and by going down to the local camera shop with my Canon 350D (Rebel XT in US), and I finally decided on the 430EX over the Canon 420EX, Canon 580EX, and Sigma 500ST Super for a few reasons:1. Manual Control- Not only does this give you the obvious ability to have more creative flexibility, but as a beginner, it gives you the opportunity to experiment, and practice the more technical skills of flash photography. Another benefit of manual mode is the ability to use opitcally triggered slave flash units in a multi-light setup. Fully automatic E-ttl mode flash will trigger the slaves with the metering preflash, and make using optical slaves impossible while using the onboard flash. (there are work arounds, but they involve reducing the output of the onboard flash to a minimal level by FEC or covering the flash with something, limiting your flexibilty in creating a lighting setup). This manual flexibilty was the primary reason I choose the 430EX over the 420EX.2. Remarkable recycle times. I have no scientific data for this, just subjective feel. The 430EX out-performed the 420EX here. Not by a huge amount, but it was noticable. Under the same conditions-bounce for fill, low ambient light (meter read .3 sec at f4), the 430EX would be able to fire off an extra few shots in succession without having to wait for recycling. Depending on the battery level I could get 3 to 5 more partial power fill flashes in low ambient light, pressing the shutter release quickly with the 430EX over the 420EX. Again, not a huge difference, but noticeable.3. Build quality was better than the Sigma. I use my camera a lot, in the most hostile of camera environments (I am an elementary school teacher) and it swings around and bangs into things, and gets swung around and banged into things...etc. The build quility compared to the Sigma isn't that different for a casual user, who will take pictures at home, or in a more controlled environment. In particular, the Sigma battery door felt weak. This wasn't a decision point for me, but it helped me lean towards my decision.4. Finally, the last factor was the ability to function as a slave in a wireless setup that isn't optical. Optical slave setups are great for experimenting, and studio type setups, when you have the only camera in the room. But they do not work when every mother and father is taking a picture at the school play, and in the future, I plan to upgrade/expand to include infared control of a flash setup. Again, there are other options for non-optically controlled slaves, but the 580EX plus Canon slaves is an easy way for a non-pro like me to go.For me, the primary selling point was manual control. I probably would have gotten the 580EX otherwise, and just might do so in the future if I can save my pennies. The Sigma 500ST Super was very tempting as well, and if you want a powerful flash, manual control, and don't plan to use a multi-flash setup, or you use an optically triggered setup, I would recommend that flash highly as well. One last point, the AF assist on the Canon flashes will cover all the focus points on a 350D (Rebel XT), and 20D, whereas the Sigma will only illuminate the center AF reliably. This AF assist is much nicer than the built in flash assist, and has a reasonable range for most portraits and group shots in low light.I hope this review helps you! It took me a long time and lots of research to decide, and hopefully, I have presented my reasons in an intelligible manner!Have fun and take lots of pictures!

5Nice Flash, worth the Money
By Stephen Becker
If you are looking for a flash for your SLR then you really only have two choices, this or the 580EX. The lower-end flash would be a waste of money and space because it doesn't provide much more then your camera's pop-up flash. The flash is very impressive; you can setup just about any bizarre exposure you want on your camera and the flash will produce enough light to make the picture actually come out (with-in its limits). Bounce flash is really helpful for shooting near-by subjects; it greatly reduces the hash shadows that often ruin indoor pictures against white walls. I am very happy with the recharge time. At close range you can normally get 2 or 3 very quick shoots in before having to wait at all; after that it is still pretty fast. When it has to fire hard it recharges in a couple of seconds on good batteries. If you have the original Digital Rebel then the 430EX also adds flash compensation control.I don't own a 580 so I can't really comment on the advantages. It has a longer range, color temperature information, -3° down angle and wireless master mode; it is also larger. At the time I bought this one the 580 was twice the price so I didn't even consider it; the prices have come down a little, so it may be worth looking at. You should also keep in mind that the 430 does support wireless slave mode, so if you buy a 580 down the road you can still use this flash as a slave.A few tips:1. Always keep spare batteries; weak batteries cause very slow recharge times on distance shoots.2. Always watch for the flash icon in the view finder. If you are shooting quickly in low-light and you happen to press the shutter before the flash has recharged you could find your self having to wait through a completely useless 10" exposure.3. If you find that you have a tendency to accidentally tap the Depth of Field Preview button the side of the camera then you probably want to use the flash's custom feature to disable "Depth of Field Preview Illumination" (I think that is how its worded). Normally the flash strobes when that button is pressed; which annoys your subjects and forces you to wait about 5 seconds for the flash to recycle.

5Thompson Elite seatpost
By Ingrid Cold
Don't even look anywhere else, this seatpost is awesome! It is carbon light but will bend when you would want it to. It is pleasing to the eye and setup is fairly easy with minimum design to save weight. I replaced a Easton Carbon post with this one and I like the Thomson far better.

5Excellent piece of furniture
By Laura
I'm not really a review writer. Kind of lazy about it. But I figured this furniture needed a review. I was a bit apprehensive about buying when there were no reviews up about it so I took a chance and felt the least I could do would be to put up a review so that any other hesitant customers may be able to see what at least one other person thought. That being said, I love the pieces (I got 2 of the black ones). They were much higher quality than I expected for the price I paid (I got them when they were on sale for half the price). They were well-packaged and came in perfect condition less than a week after ordering. I was worried about the paper being torn but it is much sturdier than I expected. They will go perfectly with the platform bed we are also purchasing.

5Japanese End Table Nightstand
By R. Cullor
After reading several good reviews, I decided to buy two of these end tables. I was still a little skeptical that they would not look as good in person as they do in the pictures. But I was pleasantly suprised when they arrived (very quickly) and were a snap to put together. They look so fabulous lit up in my living room.

5Cheaper than Propane
By TIG
I got a one-month propane bill for $300 this winter and I hadn't even had the house comfortably warm. Overwhelmed at the cost of the bill, I sought an alternative. Since it was an exceptionally cold winter, it seemed there were no heaters to be found anywhere. Locating one at a Target, I purchased it as the only option available to me.It was such a toasty, seep-into-your-bones kind of warm I decided to buy a second one. This has kept me very comfortable. It's such a welcome heating choice. Even my cat loves it. I can find her snuggled RIGHT next to one or the other of the heaters. It's a safe kind of heater too. Sometimes the cat will actually curl into contact with the heater. She'll sleep quite happily there until at last she gets too hot. When that happens she leaps away from the heater, giving me a very dirty look like it was all my fault. Silly cat.The BIG advantage though is the cost savings. My $300 propane refill bill went to $0 (my tank hasn't needed refilling yet!) My electric bill did go up though (as one would naturally expect). The electric bill? $30 higher than the previous month! So in effect, I purchased two of these heaters and paid $30 more in electricity and still came out ahead of that horrendous propane bill of the month before. From $300 for heating to $30.YEAH!

5Great, efficient heater
By D. Scott
With the cost of natural gas way up last winter, I wanted to see if I could save money by using supplemental heating in some parts of the house. I bought this one to use in my daughter's bedroom at night because I figured it was safer than a coil heater. The Honeywell 690 has more than met my expectations. It is odorless and silent (except a very quiet click when the thermostat goes on and off), easy to adjust and move around, and on its lowest setting (which I use exclusively), it is hot, but not too hot to touch. I'm able to turn the house furnace down as low as I dare (to about 50...don't want to freeze my pipes) while my daughter stays nice and cozy in her bedroom. And I really didn't notice any increase in my electric bill. But while everyone I know was passing out over their gas bills, mine was quite reasonable all winter. The nature of an oil-filled heater is that it takes time to heat a room, but then it does a fantastic job of keeping the temperature steady. You don't have a super hot zone right next to the heater with it cold everywhere else. In areas where we want quick, brief periods of heat (bathroom, kitchen table), I'm using fan-assisted coil heaters. But in rooms where the occupants will be spending hours (bedrooms, family room, home office), the slow, steady heat of the Honeywell 690 is perfect.I was so pleased with how well this performed last winter, I'm going to get one for my bedroom this winter.Note: If you buy one and it has anything beyond maybe a slight smell the first hour of usage, take it back for an exchange. I'm very sensitive to odors, and I never smelled anything with this heater.

5Perfect tasting water. Great looking, easy to use product.
By Soffy
----------------------------------Original Review September 14, 2006----------------------------------First, I need to point out the not-so-obvious fact that this is the stainless steel version of the "Water Distiller, Countertop, White Enamel" product sold by MegaHome/NutriTeam.To make a long story short, I got this product last night and this morning I woke up to perfectly tasting distilled water. For the long story...I read all the reviews for the white color version and decided this was worth a try. I placed my order by noon Friday and received the distiller just last night (Tuesday). I was anxious to test this distiller for myself because it might save me quite a bit of money if I could stop buying bottled water. The only negative reviews I'd read seemed to focus on the plastic or metallic flavor of the distilled water. The manufacturer suggests it can happen when new bottles smell like plastic. As soon as I opened the box, I searched for the plastic bottle to smell it. There was no distinct plastic smell that I could detect. One of the reviewers pointed out that your geographical location affects the mineral content in the water and thus can strongly affect its flavor. Living north of Philadelphia, water has a fairly neutral flavor and there's no high mineral content that I know about. Still, I filled the bottle with water filtered through a regular Brita filter I have connected to my faucet. Filling the bottle to the very top is exactly the amount of water required to fill the distiller container right to the fill line. Followed the simple instructions and started the distiller. It wasn't as noisy as I expected, however it's loud enough that you might not want to run it during a dinner party. (Makes good white noise if you need it.) It's supposed to take 4-6 hrs to distil one gallon of water. Warm water may shorten the process. Since I ran it overnight, with cold water, I have no idea of how long it took. That will be an experiment for the weekend. Come morning, the distiller was done and the water was surprisingly fresh and good tasting. For those concerned about whether distilled water draws minerals from your body, therefore raising acidity levels, read about the benefits of adding pH Drops before drinking. Cheers!--------------------------November 27, 2006 Update:--------------------------I use this distiller almost daily and I'm still very happy with my purchase and very glad I got it. Water tastes perfect, whether I pre-filtered it or not. I was surprised another reviewer had problems with leaks, since I've none whatsoever. The unit makes a very useful white noise, which is better for reading than for conversation though it doesn't bother me (I usually run the unit at night). I have not noticed much difference in distilling time, whether I use hot or cold water. I do get a lot of mineral deposits left over. However, I can remove them easily with a sponge or with the solvent that was provided.

2After 2 years of service, bottom of distiller rusted and leaked into electrical base.
By E. White
We enjoyed our distiller for 2 years. We used it about twice a week. Recently, the machine stopped after distilling water in the middle of a cycle. It did this several times before I took the top off, removed the screws, and cleaned it (but it wasn't very dusty at all). It still shut off shortly after starting the cycle. I then took a closer look at the base unit. When I lifted it, I was surprised to find that it was so heavy. When I tipped the base, water poured out of the outlet for the plug--not a good sign. I looked at the bottom of the stainless steel (?), and found dimples at the welds. There was evidence of rust around one of the welds, and a pinhole crack. I'm disappointed that we didn't get more use out of this machine.

5Good product for the money
By Robert G. Mertens
This distiller has worked as I expected, although I think the "5-hour" estimate of how long it takes to distill one gallon is a little optimistic. Not a problem for me - I turn it on and let it go.It produces a lot of heat in the house (can't be avoided). In cold weather, it's great because it helps warm up the house, but in the summer, it's an air-conditioning nightmare (I live in Florida). So in the heat of the summer, I will probably have to move it outside.I don't like the plastic container. I'd rather have glass, and you can get the glass jugs but they're expensive. I'd rather see the spout a little further out so that I could fit a standard glass jug underneath it. But for the money, I can't find another one that has this capability.I tested the water with a Sprite water tester and the conductivity was around 1uS/cm (microsiemens per centimeter - a standard measure of water impurity), which is comparable to distilled water from Zepherhills (rain water off my dirty roof is around 9uS/cm and my ordinary Florida tap water is around 2500uS/cm - not bad, and probably cleaner than other places - filtered tap water goes up to 2700uS/cm - which is even worse, so filters don't do dooddily-squat). When I used the charcoal filter, the conductivity went up to around 9uS/cm, so the filter adds (probably harmless) impurities, but I use it to help capture other chemical impurities that won't distill out.The inside of the container gets caked-over after a single distilling. It doesn't come off, easily. I haven't used the chemical remover yet (I've only had this about a month or so), but I use a copper kitchen scrubber on it once in a while and that keeps the buildup down to a manageable level. The leftover water (a little bit at the bottom) stinks after one use (a testament to the impurity of my tap water), so it has to be rinsed out after each use (and occasionally scrubbed).I don't like the way the top cord connects to the bottom. I have to unplug it to take the top off and put new water in. If there was a small, built-in connector that comes loose when you take the top off, that would be ideal. Also, there should be a better way to remove the top. You have to wrap your hands around it to get it off, and if it's hot, you're in for a steam burn (so I don't touch it for at least two hours after it's done). Finally, the only serious problem I have is that the "Reset" button is also the safety shutoff. There should be one of each. If the Reset button ever fails, there needs to be a back-up emergency switch that engages, and it should be plain for the customer/user to see. Otherwise, it could be a potential fire hazard (in other words, don't leave the house or go to sleep with this thing on). So I run it only when I'm going to be home and able to be near it for the duration. My previous calculations of cost to distill one gallon of water (about 26 cents - energy to vaporize one gallon of water is about 8.5MJ (MegaJoules), which is about 2.4kWh (kilowatt-hours), which costs around 26 cents), may be off, since I did not include the cost of running a fan to cool the condenser, and if you cool the air with an air conditioner, multiply that number by 4 (minimum - more if your air conditioner is inefficient) to get your total expense for one gallon of distilled water.Don't overfill the canister or you will have a pond on your kitchen cabinet.

We use these 3M products daily. They work very well for our purposes, and allow for quick change out of the spray gun to use different chemicals.
