5A great hat, and arguably the best Tilley hat
By Roquentin
This is my fourth Tilley hat after the LTM3 AIRFLO Nylamtium, the LTM5 AIRFLO Nylamtium, and the TH4 Hemp. I like them all, but this one, the TH5 Hemp, may be the one hat to rule them all. As with all Tilleys, workmanship is first rate, but there's something about hemp that satisfies in a way that the Nylamtium cannot. It's the Damascus steel of wearable fabrics. Heavier, yes, but with more personality and a more natural, less manufactured appearance. Breathability is only slightly reduced compared to the Nylamtium models, and of course it's slightly heavier, but I find it very comfortable even on the hottest days (it's 103º F in Austin as I write this). What you get in the TH5 is a hat that's about as rugged as you can imagine for a natural fabric and it wears its scars well. It's convenient to insert the temples of sunglasses through the grommets in the side of the crown, securing the earpieces with the built-in velcro loop on the inside. And there's a handy little velcro-sealed pocket underneath the crown to store your stash or other other valuables. This is really the perfect hat for outdoor music festivals, but I also use it for camping and backpacking. The TH5 has a medium brim, making it suitable for everyday use both in country and about town, with a variety of clothing styles, whereas the TH4 has Tilley's widest brim in this category, making it look a bit out of place anywhere but during serious outdoor activities. The TH4's brim also flops around somewhat because of its size, whereas the narrower TH5 brim holds its shape well without being stiff. My only complaint, and this is with respect to the mocha-colored model that I own: the headband on the inside is a light tan color, which peeks out just a bit when viewed from the underside while on the head. I'd rather it matched the color of the rest of the hat, but perhaps the reasoning is that salty sweat might otherwise leach out color onto your forehead.

5From the Sahara to Central Park, my Tilley can handle it.
By Claude Hammond
A great hat is like a great wine. When it ages, it gets better. Tilley hats start out looking good, but when they get a little wear on them, they look really, REALLY good(and you look good, too).My job takes me around the world, so any hat I wear needs to be up to certain challenges. First, my hat has to look good. But there are a lot of good-looking hats around. Second, my hat must withstand frequent air travel -- this is a tougher requirement for a hat. Because any hat I wear has to be pushed (sometimes jammed) into the overhead luggage compartments when I on a plane, the hat must be crushable, and then resume its nice shape and appearance when I arrive at my destination. My Tilley TH5 endures jet travel, the Kentucky humidity, the desert heat of places like Dubai, Phoenix, and West Texas, and also withstand the winds and rain of places like Baltimore and New York. No matter where I go, my Tilley hat withstands it all.By the way, a dermatologist friend of mine recommends Tilley hats and outdoor clothing for the great UV protection they offer. I like them for more obvious reasons: Tilley products look and feel good. One bit of advice for the first-time Tilley hat purchaser: Read the purchasing directions. One must be able to fit two fingers between one's head and the inside band of the Tilley for a proper fit. Tilley's philosophy for wearing a hat is that gravity should hold the hat on your head, instead of a snug fit. This dramatically increases the comfort factor for your head. These hats are addictive. I have two or three other Tilley models that I am planning to purchase, because they look great! (I have noticed that other Tilley owners have multiple Tilleys on their hat racks.)

5Good color. Fits perfect. Holds up to heavy yard work.
By Curt
I bought the Brown TH5 Hemp Hat. It shipped and arrived quickly. The hat fits exactly as Tilley said it would (follow their advice). The hat stays cooler than most similar hats, the quality is great (fabric and stitching) and if the reviews are right then it will last a very very long time. Not only do I wear this out and about but I do all of my yard work wearing this hat and it doesn't smell like gas, grass or sweat afterwards unlike the rest of my hats.Well worth the steep price.
