5The art of writing is alive and well...
By John Williamson
There are pens, and then there are writing instruments. A good writing instrument can be a pen, but is has a precision feel when in use, unquestioned reliability, and is designed for many years of use.The Caran d'Ache Ecridor Chevron Silver Plated Ballpoint Pen falls into that later category, for it's far more than just another ballpoint pen. It's completely crafted in Switzerland, and from the moment that one picks it up, one notices the craftsmanship. My first Caran d'Ache writing instrument was identical to this silver plated one, with the exception of having a corporate logo engraved on the barrel. It was received as a sales award from a Swiss company that was my employer at the time, and over twenty-five years and numerous refills later I still have it.Caran d'Ache makes a number of different models, and their Ecridor series owes its success to their classic hexagonal design, solid construction and long-term reliability. It is a classic in the real sense of the word. The body of this precision writing instrument is silver plated, and bears a unique retro-styled chevron design along the hexagonal barrel. It's crafted of brass with a rhodium finish. This Caran d'Ache Ecridor has a Goliath ballpoint cartridge, and features a steel point containing a free-turning ball in tungsten carbide that provides a clean blot-free line, with ink that doesn't smear. It's said to deliver up to 600 pages of handwriting... I can't refute that claim.Must admit that over the years this Caran d'Ache writing instrument has grown in personal and sentimental value to me. For that reason, I retired it from daily use a few year ago, but have added a couple of new everyday workhorse models:*Caran d'Ache Metal Collection Original 849 Ballpoint Pen*Caran D'ache Black Ballpoint PenThere's no noticeable difference in quality of construction and overall feel between these models and the silver-finished Ecridor series. And the best part is that they all share the same Goliath ballpoint cartridge as noted above, making it easy to standardize. The same Swiss-made craftsmanship is there in any of these models. Caran d'Ache is keeping the art of writing alive and well with each of these 5-star writing instruments.6/27/2009

5A Piece of Jewelry
By Simon
At Caran d' Ache, they are not just making pens; they make jewelries. I fell in love with Caran d' Ache about fifteen years ago when my father gave me a gold plated Madison for my birthday. It was a beautiful twist-top ballpoint pen with a sword clip, and I loved every single detail on that pen. The pen was very slim, flashy, and got me constant compliments. Since then, I've never bought any pens other than Caran d'Ache. I wanted to try a new style of theirs, so three years ago I gave my old one to my younger brother and got this Ecridor Chevron pen instead. Compared to my old gold plated Madison, this pen is very modest. I get compliments, but not that often. Although the current Madison line uses a different design, I think I am going back to Caran D'ache Madison Cisele Gold Plated Ballpoint Pen - CA-4680282 for my next pen.Durability is quite good. I use this pen on everyday basis for every single writing task. It has seen many abuses like dropping on blacktops and unintentional kicking and squeezing. There are visible signs of scratches, but nothing major. In comparison, I think my old Madison had better plating quality. Regarding Caran d' Ache refills, they last a long time. I am on my second refill in three years. I personally love the blue color of their ballpoint refills. They are kind of unique from any other blue pens that I have used. If you write checks with them, the color is easily distinguishable from other pens.Caran d'Ache is not just a pen. You will treat yourself with a piece of jewelry and fine Switzerland's craftsmanship that will accompany you for many years. There are variety of styles and finishes available in all different price ranges. Depending on what materials or features you are looking for, like Carbon Fiber body or Solid Gold, you can find your mate in Caran d'Ache's collection.
