New to the ASHIKO, but not to woodworking

I started hand drumming to practice my rhythms. Not knowing much about the hand drums I looked at the Congas, Ashiko and Djembe. I decided on the Ashiko because I was particularly drawn to the deep tones of the Conga and not so much to the brighter sounds of the Djembe. I decided on the Ashiko because of it's lower cost entry point and it's sound rests somewhere in between. I decided on the Bolt Tuned just because I am not at all familiar with tuning a drum and the ropes just looked difficult. I decided on this particular drum due to it's construction out of Rosewood. Rosewood is a very good tone wood, used in guitars all the time and has a very nice resonance. The drum is quite heavy with full wood and iron construction, over 20lbs. The bolt tuning was very easy to adjust and I got it tuned in little time which is amazing since it was my first time. Playing it I have found two issues. With the bolt on apparatus it is difficult to hold between your legs although with some practice it is getting easier. Also the flat iron rim in my opinion is very close to the skin, about a 1/4 inch separates them. I know for proper hand position that should be fine, but for me as a beginner I would have been more comfortable with having a little more room for error. It does keep my hands in very good position though, one smack on the iron and I remember for awhile...The first time I played it I thought I had made a mistake. I did and it was the way I was holding it. The drum really needs clearence at the bottom to resonate fully. When I was holding it off of the floor correctly it was a WONDERFUL tone. Deep, resonant, but equally crisp and sharp. Definitely a bit of a cross between a Conga and the Djembe, but more on the Conga side.I also called the company when first receiving it and I was not placed on hold, the person who answered was able to walk me through the basics and give me helpful hints on tuning and playing which was very appreciated. The goat skin, per my instructor, was top grade. He was also impressed with the tone. So all in all I like the drum a lot, I would look for more clearance between the rim and skin, but it is becoming less and less of an issue the more I play and a stand would be most helpful. Definitely a quality drum from a company who stands behind their product.UPDATE: Been playing it for about a month now, the clearance between the rim and the drum head becomes less and less of an issue as I play it. The sound if phenomenal. It is a much deeper, fuller and more resonant tone then the Djembe (IMHO). It holds it's own and can stand out in a crowd. I have really enjoyed my purchase. I have uploaded some photos of the drum.
