Fantastic Server Rack UPS
By Doug Brecht
I have 8 of these units in our server room. This is an "online" unit, which, as the previous reviewer noted, means that you are running off of the inverter 100% of the time. "Standard" UPS units pass through line power until power is lost (or drops below a certain voltage). The advantage of this type of UPS is that NO line noise passes through. We made the switch to these units after burning up some server power suppies while running off of a (lower grade) generator. The standard UPS we were using back then simply passed the dirty power through to our equipment...This unit occupies 2U of rack space (not 1, as the previous reviewer said). It makes a bit of noise, but nothing objectionable in a server room... certainly quieter than our servers!

realllly noisey 60mm fan
By K. Yee
This UPS fits in 1U racks, so they had to compromise by making the one fan spin wayyyy too fast, so it's noisey and is on all the time. It's a Delta fan as well, so it's not known for being quiet fan brand. The power supply design is great otherwise: won't dump its load if the battery dies (unlike the APC SmartUPS), does double conversion so you're always running from a clean sine wave off the battery, has a USB port and there is even Linux support. You can finally replace the battery (a lot of other Tripplite's you can't replace the battery on) with inexpensive replacements. You can increase the backup power capacity by plugging in extra modules. Dang near perfect on my checklist except for the bloody loud fan.Don't get this if you plan to use it in your living room :-(

Excellent product but NOT for home use
By Honest Abe
An excellent "rack-mount" (more on that later) UPS, but beware - it has the Fan From Hell. Extremely noisy, so not suitable for home use or anything outside of your server room. As for "rack-mount", it comes with support brackets that are anything but standard and won't even easily adapt to Tripp-Lite's own rack. Be prepared to get some washers and fiddle - it will eventually work. Mine's teamed up with the companion external battery pack and makes a neat installation...with some effort. BTW, the external battery pack is a true rack mount and takes about two seconds to install. So only 4 stars due to (lack of) ease of installation.
